Periodontal Disease
Periodontal (Gum) disease is the advanced form of Gingivitis – a buildup of harmful bacteria around the teeth and gums. If left untreated, it can cause bleeding and painful gums, damage to the soft tissue that surround teeth, and even lead to tooth loss itself.
This gum disease typically occurs when plaque and tarter build-up in the mouth cause gingivitis. When untreated, this can lead to an even more severe gum disease, periodontitis that can be the cause of severe pain and tooth loss.
The great news, though – gum disease is typically reversible, and can be prevented with proper oral care. Dr. Eric Berkner, and your team of oral hygiene specialists at Ponderosa Dental Arts are experts at the proper care and removal of the plaque and tartar which can cause gingivitis and gum disease, preventing the further spread of the disease and saving you from painful and potentially hazardous issues in the future. Using specialized cleaning techniques, we can remove plaque and tarter in both the easy to reach above-the-gumline areas, as well as below the gumline, and your mouth can be treated with a variety of antimicrobial medications. We can then provide specific instructions and recommendations for preventing additional complications in the fight to keep your smile at its absolute best and healthiest.
